What answer engine optimization actually costs in Toronto

cite0 Toronto, ON · Updated
TL;DR

Three industry pricing guides published in 2026 agree on the shape: an entry-level AEO retainer is $1,000–$3,500 a month, a one-time audit is $1,500–$7,500, mid-market programs run $3,000–$12,000 a month, and anything under about $1,500 a month claiming the full scope is usually relabelled SEO. The four Toronto agencies that rank for these terms publish no prices at all. Monitoring tools run $29–$499 a month. cite0 charges $99, $199 or $499 a month USD, published, with the measurement and the implementation in the same plan — and for a single-location business we think that is the right order of magnitude, for reasons set out below.

What do the 2026 pricing guides say AEO costs?

Three agencies published AEO pricing guides in 2026. None is Toronto-specific and none is written for a single-location business, but together they are the only public benchmark, and they broadly agree.

Monthly retainer tiers, USD, as published. Each guide is linked in the sources with its date.
Tier310 Creative (Aug 2026)Digital Elevator (Jul 2026)SEM Nexus (Apr 2026)
Entry / monitoring$1,000–$3,500$1,000–$2,500$1,000–$2,500
Growth / active optimization$4,000–$12,000$3,000–$8,000$4,000–$8,000
Enterprise / category leadership$15,000–$50,000+$10,000–$25,000+$10,000–$25,000+
One-time audit$1,500–$7,500——
Hourly$100–$250——
Productised / freelance—$500–$2,500/mo; $150–$2,000 per project—

Two of the three attach a warning to the bottom tier. 310 Creative says a quote under about $1,500 a month claiming full AEO scope “is likely repackaged SEO”; SEM Nexus labels its $1,000–$2,500 tier the “fake AEO trap” aimed at small local businesses. Both are agencies selling the tiers above, so read the warning with that in mind — but the underlying point is fair: at that price an agency cannot run a content program and multi-engine reporting, so the question is what you are actually getting.

What do Toronto agencies charge?

We do not know, and neither will you from their websites. The four agencies that currently rank for Toronto AEO and AI search optimization terms — aeoagency.ca, Digital6ix, Logik Digital and Voofa — each publish a service page and a free audit or strategy call, and no price. That is normal for agency work. It also means the published benchmark for a Toronto business is the three guides above, written for a different customer, and the tools below.

What do the tools cost?

If you want measurement without an agency, the self-serve platforms run from $29 to $499 a month. The full comparison is on our roundup of AI visibility tools for local business; the short version:

ToolEntry, monthlyNotes
Otterly.ai$2915 prompts, four engines, country-level; 100 prompts at $189
Peec AI$9550 prompts, three of six models, one country
cite0$99105 neighbourhood-level questions; fixes implemented from $199
ProfoundQuotedFree 7-day trial, then Enterprise; self-serve plans withdrawn Sept 2026
citelayer$150 one-timeAudit; implementation $2,909–$5,818 one-time; monitoring $873/quarter

What should a single-location business actually pay?

Our view, and we have an interest in it, so here is the reasoning rather than the conclusion.

The agency tiers are priced for content volume: two to four pieces a month at the mid tier, daily publishing at the top, plus reporting across several engines and markets. A business with one address does not need that. What it needs is a short, specific list: a Google Business Profile that is complete and consistent, a website a crawler can read without executing JavaScript, a handful of pages that answer the questions people actually ask, and a measurement that tells you whether any of it moved the answer. That is bounded work. It is also, for the most part, the same work as doing local SEO properly — which is why we think the AEO premium for a local business should be small, and why a four-figure monthly retainer for one location is paying for a program you will not use.

cite0 charges $99 a month to measure — 105 questions, weekly, from your neighbourhood — and $199 to also implement the profile and site fixes and keep measuring. $499 adds Gemini, more questions and content optimization. All USD, all published, all starting with a free 7-day demo that runs your actual questions before you pay. If an agency quotes you more, ask what the extra buys that this does not; sometimes the answer is a content program you genuinely need, and then the retainer is the right call.

How much should a Toronto local business pay for AEO?

For one location, a few hundred dollars a month for measurement plus implementation of the profile, site and content signals — not a four-figure agency retainer. The retainer tiers in the industry guides are priced for B2B SaaS and multi-market brands with content programs. A med spa, clinic or trades business has a short list of fixes and a small set of questions to win, and should pay accordingly.

Is AEO more expensive than SEO?

The guides say yes at the agency level: traditional SEO retainers of $2,000–$7,500 a month against $3,000–$15,000 for AEO, with each additional AI engine adding 20–40%. The reason is mostly content volume and multi-engine reporting. For a local business most of the AEO work is the same work as local SEO done properly, which is why the premium should be small.

Why don't Toronto AEO agencies publish prices?

Because custom quoting is the norm for agency services and because a published price is a commitment. We checked the four Toronto agencies that currently rank for AEO and AI search optimization terms — aeoagency.ca, Digital6ix, Logik Digital and Voofa — and none lists a number; each offers a free audit or strategy call instead. That is not a criticism of them, but it does mean a Toronto business cannot budget from their sites. We publish ours so you can.
